Daily COVID-19 Screening Process

Companies should have some sort of daily check-in/screening process for COVID-19. The check-in system typically asks employees about whether they've had a fever during the last day, has experienced other possible COVID-19 symptoms, and whether the employee has a likelihood of significant exposure to COVID-19. The check-in process may also include a forehead temperature check.

Some Considerations:
Large companies may need to leave a window of time between work shifts, to be able to maintain social distancing during shift change. They might also man a check-in station or invest in automated tablet-driven systems. Manning a station may allow matrix forms with all employee names, instead of a form for each person. If the check-in is manned, consider installing a plexi shield, or having that person wear a face shield. Some companies will need dual systems in English and Spanish.

There should be cleaning supplies for wiping down shared items between uses (tablet, pen, thermometer). If not required in your county, some companies choose only check someone's temperature when an employee has expressed a possible concern about their health status. The preferred device for measuring temperature for multiple people is a type that only touches the person holding the device (The inexpensive oral type is fine for home use).

Try to not add unnecessary administrative tasks (ie File forms by date - don't sort them into individual employee files. Design the forms so they can be checked easily/quickly in batches). Companies do have special permission to legally collect personnel data related to COVID-19 risks only - However, an individual's data must not be shared. For this reason, if there is a manual self-check-in, companies normally have each employee complete a simple paper form and put it in a sealed drop box (Having employees add a line to a shared form would leave other's data exposed).

A sample questionnaire follows:

If you are willing to put up computer kiosks at entrances, the Mayo Clinic has developed an on-line questionnaire, that you could have employees use as they enter that allows them to print their completed form (then they could sign it before dropping in a collection box).
